GSL6: Accommodations and Travel

HISTORY[1]

Clemson University was established in 1889. Thomas Green Clemson left the Fort Hill plantation and a large part of his personal estate to establish what would become Clemson University.

Originally an all-male military school, Clemson Agricultural College opened in July 1893 with 446 students. Clemson became a coeducational institution in 1955 when the college moved to “civilian” status for students. Expanded academic offerings and research pursuits led the way for the college to be renamed Clemson University in 1964.

Clemson has over 22,600 students in attendance both in undergraduate and graduate programs. The Current President as of December 31, 2013 is James P. Clements.

GETTING TO CLEMSON UNIVERSITY

By Air

When choosing which airport to fly to/from, consider cost of ground transportation to/from airport as well as your time to determine the true cost of your transportation.

Greenville- Spartanburg International Airport (GSP)

We strongly recommend flying into Greenville- Spartanburg International Airport. Costs could be lower overall when factoring in rental car from some other airports such as Hartsfield Jackson International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta or Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina.

The campus is located approximately 1 hour from GSP Airport. Transportation companies such as Uber and Lyft are available at the airport. Several rental car services are available as well.

Driving directions from GSP airport:

Get on I-85 S from Aviation Pkwy. Use the right lane to merge onto I-85 S via the ramp to Greenville. Follow I-85 S to Anderson County. Take exit 19B to merge onto SC-28 W/US-76 W/Clemson Blvd toward Clemson. Follow SC-28 W/US-76 W to turn left onto S-39-343. Slight left onto S-39-22/Old Stone Church Rd. Continue to follow S-39-22 then turn left onto Old Stadium Rd. Turn left onto Madren Center Dr.

Other Airports:

Visitors also may opt to fly to Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta (ATL), GA or Douglas International Airport in Charlotte (CLT), NC. Clemson University is 2.5-3 hours from ATL airport and CLT airport is 2.5 to 3.5 hours, times depending upon both cities traffic conditions. Both options are substantially farther than GSP airport in Greenville, SC, therefore, the overall expenses would be much higher.

From ATL airport to Madren Center by car:

Get on I-85 N: Head east on N Terminal Pkwy. Continue straight to stay on N Terminal Pkwy and keep right at the fork, follow signs for I-85 N/I-20/I-75 N/Atlanta and merge onto I-85 N. Follow I-85 N to SC-187 in Anderson County. Take exit 14 from I-85 N. Turn left onto SC-187. Use any lane to turn left onto US-76 E

Turn left onto S-39-343. Slight left onto S-39-22/Old Stone Church Rd. Continue to follow S-39-22. Turn left onto Old Stadium Rd and turn left onto Madren Center Dr.

From CLT airport to Madren Center by car:

Get on I-85 S in 12, Paw Creek from Old Dowd Rd and US-29 S/US-74 W/Wilkinson Blvd. Head south on Josh Birmingham Pkwy. Keep right to continue on Old Dowd Rd. At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit and stay on Old Dowd Rd. Turn right onto Marshall Dr. Turn left at the 1st cross street onto US-29 S/US-74 W/Wilkinson Blvd. Turn left onto the ramp to Interstate 485 Inner N/Spartanburg. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Gastonia/Spartanburg and merge onto I-85 S. Follow I-85 S to Anderson County. Take exit 19B from I-85 S to merge onto SC-28 W/US-76 W/Clemson Blvd toward Clemson. Turn left onto S-39-343.
