Personal Statement

Between 2013 and 2016, I volunteered at a community organization in Topeka that serves the needs of low-income, marginalized residents in a neighborhood marked by high crime, poverty, and isolation. As a freshman at KU, I returned to this organization to collaborate with their leaders on a research project to address the root causes of poor health outcomes and the consequences of structural violence. Over Summer 2017, we conducted a study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the associated negative health outcomes of adult residents. We are now in the process of writing a report based on these findings that will allow for more tailored interventions, data to add to future grant applications, and policy recommendations. I am passionately committed, and honored, to contribute to the improvements that will continue in this community. Through the Behavioral Economics lab at KU, I am now pursing opportunities to work with civic leaders and policymakers to achieve social change and eliminate health disparities. For example, beginning Spring 2018, I will be assisting with a research project on KU's tobacco-free campus policy. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of the policy and recommend improvements to university leaders.
