Sydney Mastey

University of Wisconsin-Superior

Sydney Mastey, a junior majoring in Legal Studies at UW-Superior, is an advocate for several local organizations dedicated to creating long-term social change in the areas of domestic and sexual violence.

She has worked collaboratively to educate our community on domestic and sexual assault, serving on event planning committees, working with the local school district to implement educational programming, and leading community outreach. She is tirelessly involved with all related local events, to which she brings a welcome balance of the college student perspective, an ability to effectively reach out to high school students, and her passionate commitment to the cause. She also volunteers many hours with a local nonprofit whose mission is to effectuate long-term changes to how sexual and domestic violence is addressed and how victims are supported and assisted.

With plans to attend law school and continue her work in the nonprofit world after an internship with the County District Attorney's office, she maintains a 3.98 cumulative GPA and is the epitome of a student who engages in collaborative action both on campus and in the community. She demonstrates the motivation and potential of a life-long civic leader.

Personal Statement

My passion for people began young when I made the decision to be an attorney that fought for those who could not fight for themselves. However, my true drive to make social change surfaced in my freshman year of college after being taught about the prevalence of domestic abuse and sexual assault. This centered my focus and provided opportunities to begin my fight for social change. I began volunteering at a local women's shelter, Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse ("CASDA"). My experience at CASDA as an advocate inspired me to continue my commitment to my new community by instilling long-term social change. I became a member of the Douglas County Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response Teams ("DV CCR") ("SA CCR"). Through these teams, I have been given the opportunity to organize artwork displays, table at events across the city, and reach out to local high schools on safe relationships. After my upcoming internship in the District Attorney's Office, I plan to attend law school, where I will gain the necessary credentials to join non-profits across the nation to help change the social norm on violence, and protect victims who have been long forgotten in everyday society.
