University of La Verne

Cynthia Corona is a third year Business Administration major at the University of La Verne. This past year, she has been working on raising awareness and creating a community of allies, on campus, to advocate for immigrants' rights. Cynthia serves as the president of the Dreamers club; whose mission is to create an inclusive community of undocumented students and allies in order to provide social and academic support. Cynthia is currently working with the campus community and the local coalition for immigrants' rights to urge congress to pass a Clean Dream Act in 2018.

Personal Statement

I became involved in the fight for immigrants' rights because I am a product of the hard work, courage, and resilience of our immigrant community. I am privileged because of my family's decision to immigrate to the United States. Like my family, there are others who are currently being criminalized and dehumanized for pursuing a better quality of life. People live in fear that they will be separated from their families and have to overcome trying obstacles for the most basic of human needs such as food and shelter. This has led me to create an inclusive community on campus to provide social and academic support for anyone that may be affected. We have organized workshops to raise awareness about the struggles affecting this community, while demonstrating that the negative rhetoric in the media, under our current administration, is out of touch with our community. We have also worked to encourage and empower our campus community through civic engagement. Our goal is to help constituents reach out to office-holders and push for legislation that will provide work/driving permits, relief from deportation, and a pathway to citizenship to our undocumented community.
