Daniel Suber

University of North Carolina Asheville

Daniel has been enthusiastically nominated by several faculty and staff members from UNC Asheville. His work within the community, in the classroom, and on campus strongly exhibit why Daniel should be a Newman Civic Fellow. He is highly engaged in his community- promoting positive change and awareness to those most affected by structural inequality. Daniel is passionate, hard-working, articulate, and driven. He will be an excellent Newman Civic Fellow and will benefit greatly from this experience.

Personal Statement

I have learned that there is much to be revealed by working with people, especially youth. I believe it is important to focus on young people because they have so much potential. I live in a public housing community and see the struggles and challenges that youth in these communities face. Despite the challenges that many youths endure, there is also a lot of light, potential and love among community members. I want to help communities reach their potential; much can change with the proper resources, creativity, and inspiration.

I have contributed to two projects in my neighborhood. I have helped plan a community mural that residents painted together and also organized a celebration known as Juneteenth, that included food and performances from youth in the neighborhood, alongside artists from around the city. The celebration, and the mural project, brightened the neighborhood and brought happiness and fun to community members.

I currently work with Word on the Street, an online teen magazine for arts, culture, and expression, as a youth coordinator, and with the Center for Diversity Education, building pathways for youth of color to environmental careers. The next project I am developing is a Multicultural College and Business Conference for students to address the racial achievement gap.
