Mirella Espino
University of Wisconsin Colleges-University of Wisconsin-ExtensionMirella Espino, a first-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County, is a student who is actively engaged in a wide array of volunteer activities designed to make the lives of other, less fortunate people better. Throughout high school and into the first year of college, Mirella has been dedicated to serving others by engaging in mentoring activities. These activities range from participating in the community service activities of the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service to tutoring students at the local middle school. Mirella particularly enjoys working with and tutoring children who might not have someone at home who can help with homework or answer other questions about school. Most first-semester college students are mainly concerned with finding friends and determining how to be successful at the college level. Mirella's priority, on the other hand, is to find ways to continue her community service while she continues her own professional and educational journey. Mirella truly embodies the spirit and belief that giving to others is what makes life meaningful and fulfilling.
Personal Statement
Throughout high school and college, I have been able to impact my community. I have been involved in projects and activities that advocate for positive changes in addressing different social issues. Currently, I have provided close to 200 hours of community service, and I have enjoyed every minute. During high school, I mainly focused on helping the large ELL student population in my school district. I not only helped but also brought awareness to issues they faced through my leadership roles in the clubs I was involved in. At the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County, I have worked with the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service. I have learned very important leadership and community engagement skills, which I will use to address and solve social issues during my career. My career choice is focused on solving social issues. I chose a Latin American Studies major and Political Science minor, so I will not only be well-equipped with the necessary skills and background to help people, but I will also have a deep and unique understanding of culture, history and values. Wherever I go, I know that I will continue fighting for people who do not feel they have a voice.
