Marley Uran

University of Wisconsin-Parkside

Marley Uran is currently a sophomore with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 and will be part of the class of 2018. She plans to graduate with a Communication degree with certification in Conflict Analysis & Resolution, and Community-Based Learning. Marley has a passion for helping others and has focused her volunteer activities to working with the homeless; she is currently involved with HALO (Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization) in Racine, WI and is a member of the Habitat for Humanity Club on campus. One of Marley's professors shared, with me, the quote that she used in her introduction in an electronic portfolio for a communication class: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead. Ms. Uran has taken this quote to heart, and made it her goal, after graduation, to work for a non-profit or an organization that does social activism, especially one that aims to help those living in poverty. Marley has begun her journey to this goal through her volunteerism, and engaging and motivating those around her to help. This, I feel, makes her an ideal candidate for the Newman Civic Fellows Award.

Personal Statement

Growing up, I got to watch my mother extend kindness and grace to those around her. My mother's example lead me to also have a strong passion to serve those around me as well; specifically those living in poverty. Over the course of the last few years, I have had the opportunity to serve a diverse group of people. I have marched & lobbied in Washington, D.C. with the Invisible Children organization, had the opportunity to love those living in the bush of Zambia, been able to lead a small group of sixth grade girls at my local church's youth group and have been able to serve in various ways at Racine's local homeless shelter, HALO. These rich hands-on experiences have introduced me to many beautiful souls as well as deeply shaped my character. Through these various volunteer opportunities, I have learned how to research social issues, be an advocate, grow my communication skills, listen well and ultimately serve those around me better.
