Joel Colon

University of Massachusetts Boston

Joel Colon is a sophomore Psychology major at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Since he overcame a personal health crisis during high school, he has been committed to helping low income children stay healthy and safe. Joel wants to be a Child Psychologist to help young children overcome tragedy and obstacles in their lives. Growing up in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he volunteered often through his church. Additionally, Joel volunteered with homeless shelters in the area. Since coming to the University of Massachusetts Boston, Joel participated in a freshman leadership program that led him to get involved with the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, where he now works as the Program Assistant for Community Engagement. As a Program Assistant, he helps organize days of service for up to 200 people, as well as other service events throughout the year to promote volunteering and engage his peers in giving back to the Boston community.

Personal Statement

Being deeply involved with my community has always been a driving force in my life. Growing up, I have always been dedicated to assisting those in need in my city. I have dedicated my life to helping the people of my community, especially homeless families, a cause about which I feel very strongly. Continuing my passion for service in college has continued to shape the type of person that I am. I have had the privilege of working as the Program Assistant in the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, and through this position I have been able to show students on campus the great need within our community and the reason why I serve - to help those that have had a rough time in life.
