Anea Moore

Anea Moore, a sophomore at the University Pennsylvania, has engaged in distinguished service and demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged students in the West Philadelphia community and at Penn. Anea's approach is multifaceted: she works directly with youth and families in West Philadelphia to address their immediate needs, supports local school administration and leadership to create more long-term change, and works with university partners to mobilize resources. She understands that improving urban education requires solutions from multiple angles. Anea has also made significant contributions to the Penn community by advocating for the voices of minority, first-generation and low-income students on campus. Finally, in addition to her many leadership roles at Penn, Anea serves as a policy fellow in Philadelphia City Councilwoman At-Large Helen Gym's office. Anea's energy, passion, and personal experiences in the community are an inspiration for the engagement of other students, staff, and faculty.

Personal Statement

My mom always said if she had gone to college, she would have pursued her dreams and became a teacher. After she passed away half way through my first semester of college, I desperately wanted to feel connected to her. This led me to volunteering at a music program at a local elementary school, where I eventually went on to become the director of a student choir. As I spent more time at this school, I came to understand that our current education system is the primary producer of inequality in this country and it inhibits many poor, minority citizens like my mom from pursuing their dreams. On campus, I'm the Community Engagement Director for Penn First, Penn's only group dedicated to serving first-generation, low-income students and the communities where they come from. I've also been working with the Office of Family and Community Engagement at the same school where I teach music through an internship with the Netter Center for Community Partnerships. Finally, I've tried to tie all of my civic engagement work together by serving as a policy fellow for City Councilwoman Helen Gym, where I research for and help with projects and policies dedicated to alleviating poverty.
