Sashay Carroll

Sashay is energetic, articulate, knowledgeable, and an effective communicator. She reflects the spirit of the Newman Civic Fellowship in a variety of ways evidenced through her investment of time and talent to advocate for an inclusive community through coordinating student panels and presenting at local conferences. Sashay is a first generation college student dedicated to making her university and community better for everyone. Sashay is passionate about creating change and making the world a better place. She strives to create an inclusive and caring community in order for everyone to feel welcome. Upon her graduation from the University of Northern Iowa, Sashay is excited to start her career in the media industry. She hopes that through her work in media she will be able to change the dialogue around African Americans by continuing to have open and honest discussions.

Personal Statement

I have always had a passion for creating positive change within my community. Being an African American woman living in Cedar Falls, Iowa, I have seen first hand the injustices that people of color in my community are confronted with systematically. I refuse to stand by while students of color feel ostracized and voiceless. This is why I have facilitated multiple discussions with faculty and staff centered around creating an inclusive environment for all students. My calling to fight institutional racism is why I coordinated a student panel to present at the Engage, Empower, Act Conference. This conference was developed in an effort to generate economic inclusion in the Cedar Valley. Through a social justice exhibit I was able to educate students on campus about prevalent issues that affect communities of color such as environmental oppression, mass incarceration, and gaps in educational opportunity. Additionally, I currently serve as a mentor for the Job Foundation, an organization which strives to teach financial literacy to children from low income backgrounds. By taking the initiative to influence institutions that have historically oppressed people of color I am creating a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
