Nina Schneider

University of San DIego

Nina Schneider, a third-year student at the University of San Diego (USD), is an active and engaged leader committed to creating positive social change in the larger San Diego community. Through USD's Mulvaney Center, Nina was selected, among numerous student leaders, to serve as the Director of the Youth Engagement Initiative. In her role she has become an advocate for improving the system of education as well as a leader to her peers. By exposing other students to San Diego's local K-12 school system, Nina works to transform the lens through which fellow college students come to understand education including quality, access, and equity among many other elements.

In addition to her exemplary work as Director, Nina is active and engaged in a wide range of social issues, which include: greater advocacy for San Diego's local Jewish community, racial equity work, efforts to combat poverty, and civic dialogue. She has a deep understanding for the complexity of each social issue and their intersections, and her wisdom rests far beyond her years. Nina is currently majoring in Sociology and Environmental Studies, with the aspiration of connecting her studies to the advocacy her community, in particular, young person's educational rights.

Nina Schneider's community engagement, passion for social issues, and desire to follow a career path dedicated to marginalized communities illustrates her values. She embodies USD's commitment, as a Roman Catholic institution, to advancing academic excellence, creating a diverse and inclusive community and preparing leaders who are dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service.

Personal Statement

My name is Nina Schneider and I am a Junior at the University of San Diego. As a child, I was raised in the greater Los Angeles area. Family, or truly a sense of community is something I've always held dear to my heart. Growing up as a triplet, I consider myself very attune to the needs of others. Empathy along with relationship building informs the ways in which I engage with all whom I encounter. The same sorts of values I grew to establish in my household quickly spread into education, where I found my passion connecting with youth, both through the outdoors, in nature and with horse, and inside of the classroom. In the years that I have been at the University of San Diego, I continue to actively pursue and deepen my passion for learning, where I now serve as the Director of the Youth Engagement Initiative, housed in the Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action. What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity that I have to positively touch the lives of young people here in our San Diego community. What an honor it has been.
