Jordan Borenstein

University of Central Florida

Ms. Jordan Borenstein, a freshman majoring in Writing & Rhetoric with a minor in Film-Cinema Studies, for the 2019-2020 Newman Civic Fellowship.

Jordan is greatly concerned with skin cancer and its affect on our global community. While skin cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among people aged 15-25, she also understands that it is one of the most preventable cancers. As Jordan notes that she currently cannot "reach the entire planet just yet" she's working with her local community, Knight Nation, to help alleviate the problem.

Jordan is working to address this high-risk issue in several ways:
• Create and display informative flyers and posters around the UCF campus
• Place information on UCF's website about the issue
• Place sunscreen application machines (SAMs) for use by anyone around campus
• Continue to build a team of LEAD Scholars who work to create a public service campaign regarding skin health and sun-safety

Personal Statement

There is a problem I cannot solve but one I can influence: skin cancer. It's a major issue. It's global. Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among young people aged 15-25. It's also one of the most preventable cancers there are but people tend to brush it off like it's not a big deal. Getting sunburnt is a big deal. This problem is significant and it has become a public health epidemic. I've grown up seeing the brutal effects of skin cancer. My father is a Dermatologist and he comes home each day with at least three new cases of cancer each day. Three new cases each work day for seventeen years is an incredible number and it's only increasing.
I can't reach the entire planet just yet, so for now I'll work on my home, Knight Nation. A way of solving this high-risk issue is to put up informative public awareness posters/flyers around campus and on the UCF Website. I would also like to place sunscreen application machines (SAM) that are free for anyone to use around campus. I would like to place the first SAM at the rec center pool in May which is Melanoma Awareness month. To accomplish this I need to answer key questions which are specified below:
Who: I will build a team of LEAD Scholars who will create a public service campaign regarding skin health and sun-safety.
What: Our team will create and post monthly informative posters/flyers beginning in February: (Possible themes: Feb: Love the Skin You're In- Romantic Make-up tips, March: Sun Smarts for Spring Break-Beach & sport skin protection and Make-up tips , April: Spray Tan! -Pledge to avoid sunburns & tanning beds, May-Melanoma Awareness event at Community pool and Sunscreen Application Machine Dedication pool party).
When: This project can be implemented immediately with the hopes to become an annual
