Personal Statement

Since childhood, I have been involved in service projects and always felt a strong desire to give back to my community and help others. However, I struggled to see how these passions could translate into a career in making long-lasting social change. When I started at the University of Massachusetts Boston, I found the Women's and Gender Studies department which sparked my passion for gender justice and women's empowerment. As a young woman, I find it extremely important to study the history of gender in society and the intersectionality of identity to challenge preconceived notions and advocate for equity for all. As an intern in the Governor's Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, I see the connection between my studies, my experience on campus, and the power of public service to make legal and societal change. Through my work in the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, I promote community engagement as a way to learn more about local and global issues and encourage students to find their passions and be agents of change. I believe student civic engagement is crucial for student development, and I love doing this work on our campus everyday and going forward to a career in government and public service.
