Margaret Annunziata
The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
With the utmost regard for social justice, Margaret Annunziata, exemplifies advocacy and leadership in her community. She is a second-year student in the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Treatment. Margaret consistently works towards embodying the school’s values – service, community, education, and innovation -- so to be able to advocate for the well-being of vulnerable populations. Margaret currently serves as a tutor/mentor through Homework Help Room (HHR), an after-school program that is held with The Community Builders Inc. – Oakley Square Apartments, a low income housing complex located on Chicago’s west side. TCB’s mission is to help build and sustain strong communities and advance towards racial equity. Margaret aids in realizing this mission weekly, dedicating her time and effort to offer her mentee empowerment through academic skill building and socio-emotional support. Margaret is also a part of TCSPP’s Social Justice Leadership Academy (SJLA), through which she volunteers on and off campus and engages in social justice centered discussions with fellow SJLA members. Margaret is a dedicated leader who is committed to social equity and the betterment of her community.
Personal Statement
As I work toward my Masters in Counseling Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, my studies have propelled my aspirations to incite social justice reform. I believe widespread change begins at the community level through individual efforts. This belief fuels my passion in addressing the myriad of issues in our socioeconomic system to help build communities where all people can reach their full potential. My journey began with involvement in the Social Justice Leadership Academy, an organizer of on- and off-campus volunteer activities. Through SJLA, I am involved in initiatives spanning the Anti-Bullying Prevention Conference and volunteering at the Lincoln Park Community Shelter. Additionally, through Community Builders Inc., I provide social and emotional support, as well as homework mentorship, for students in Chicago’s Oakley Square apartment complex. I also work with the Community Stewardship Program Manager at the Chicago Park District in enhancing volunteer and park opportunities for people with disabilities. This involvement is just the start of how I hope to contribute toward the fight for social justice, one initiative at a time. I am eager for more opportunities to help build stronger communities however I can, wherever I can, for the many who so deserve it.
