Eunice Nazar
Manhattan College
Eunice Nazar is a natural leader, using her passion for furthering social justice initiatives both on and off campus. She is deeply engaged in building relationships within Manhattan College and with the surrounding communities. Eunice’s extensive involvement includes leadership positions on Student Government, the Diversity Curriculum Committee, and her position as Second Deputy Speaker for the Manhattan College Senate. Eunice also serves as a tutor for the Manhattan College Writing Center and as a History Fellow, for which she won an award as the best Supplemental Instructor. Eunice is also an Opportunity Program Mentor, because she believes in the program’s mission to mitigate existing disparities by supporting and empowering students from underserved communities. Off campus, Eunice is engaged with the local community as a policy intern for Mekong NYC, whose mission is to improve the quality of life of the Southeast Asian community in the Bronx and throughout New York City by achieving equity through community organizing and healing, promoting arts, culture, and language, and improving access to essential social services. Through her work with Mekong NYC, Eunice aided in the launch of a state-wide campaign to advocate, collaborate with local organizations, and foster community for locals in the Bronx.
Personal Statement
Born in the Philippines, amidst extreme poverty and raised in the Bronx, the visibility of inequities and disparities became clear to me at a young age. I have witnessed how structural disadvantages are reflected in specific groups' unequal access to essential resources. My belief in human rights and justice for all solidified and fueled my commitment to serving vulnerable communities. Addressing the root causes of social issues requires a multifaceted approach with solidarity and collaboration between different groups. The mission is to increase the quality of life and ensure access to social and educational opportunities for under-resourced communities by developing effective policies and programs. Interning for Mekong NYC allowed me to aid in the launch of a state-wide campaign, the Southeast Asian Defense Project, and collaborate with local organizations to foster community for locals in the Bronx. I also advocate for youth development as a mentor through my high school’s Community Outreach Team. As an Opportunity Program mentor, I work to mitigate existing disparities by supporting students from underrepresented communities. Finally, as a representative of Student Government, as Second Deputy Speaker for the Senate, and on the Diversity Curriculum Committee, I have championed diversity, inclusion, and student needs.
