Rebecca Hart

Western Carolina University

Rebecca Hart, a third-year student at Western Carolina University, is a student leader focused on and inspired by engaging fellow students in the democratic process. Over the course of the past three years, she has worked tirelessly to encourage her fellow students to vote because she recognizes the power of voting to change daily lives. Single-handedly, Rebecca registered over 200 voters for the 2020 general election and helped organize numerous impactful educational programs. Together with other members of the Student Democracy Coalition, Rebecca is currently working on innovative ways to register, engage, and activate student voters on campus.

Personal Statement

Public service was instilled in me from a young age from watching both my parents work long hours in law enforcement. At 10-years-old, I walked around my nana’s work with a petition to make it illegal to kill sharks. Believing them essential for the ocean’s ecosystem, I was disgusted at how they were killed for gain. Now I advocate for my fellow peers through writing legislation in our Student Government Association and the UNC Association of Student Governments, promoting inclusive programs through the Intercultural Affairs Council, and encouraging civil involvement through the Student Democracy Coalition. I study political science and communication with minors in marketing and leadership because I feel that politicians have a negative connation because the people feel unheard. There isn’t proper communication, and I am hoping the skills I learn through a communication degree will allow me to accurately communicate with the public and champion for what they need most. After college, I plan to attend graduate school and, eventually, work in Congress. I want to spend my life advocating for the underdog until there is no underdog left to advocate for and that includes both humans, animals, and the land.
