Tyana Thornton
Benedict College
Ms. Tyana Thornton is a student leader in her second year of Public Health program at Benedict College. She is actively engaged in the campus environment and is currently serving as a Student Ambassador for Admissions and Student Marketing, a member of the Le Diamond Pom Squad, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Inc., the student representative of the Public Health Advisory Board, and the Secretary for the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Club.
In addition to being actively involved, Ms. Thornton has excelled in the classroom as well. Currently, she holds a 3.9 GPA and has been inducted into the Benedict College School of Honors, the National Society of Leadership and Success Sigma Alpha Pi Chapter, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is currently working to bring awareness to issues surrounding health and wellness to ensure students are making informed, healthy choices while in college.
Personal Statement
Billie Jean King once stated that "Champions keep playing until they get it right." Benedict College was not my first choice when I decided to go to college. However, it has definitely been the best for me. As a transfer student, this college has provided many opportunities to connect with and embrace the community. In selecting Public Health as a major, I have been afforded opportunities to engage in learning and applicable practice on issues such as HIV/AIDS, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and domestic violence.
I have volunteered with the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council and the College's Student Health Center to coordinate and implement campus testing events and blood drives. Not only was I able to help my peers know the importance of healthy behaviors, I was also able to gain experience in my subject area. In addition to volunteering, I also serve as a mentor to new members of one of my student organizations, Sister Act. This organization promotes sisterhood and raises awareness of issues that primarily affect women.
