Maiah Overton-Ashford

William Peace University

Maiah has been a steadfast member of the civic engagement community here at WPU for the past year and a half. She has participated in the Alternative Fall Break Trip to Appalachian Service Project, various Service Saturdays here in Raleigh, and organizing on campus events such as the DKMS Bone Marrow Registry Drive.
In working with Maiah, I seen her willingness to serve others in the name of William Peace University and done so with the most positive of attitudes. Maiah has proven time and again her devotion to community service by being to jump in with both feet anytime she is called upon. Beyond her positive attitude, and willingness, she brings to the civic engagement community a depth of perception that is unmatched. She continuously seeks out understand and value in complex ideas in the world. She demonstrates a nimble mind, leading to an innate ability to empathize with the people she is engaged with.

Personal Statement

Raised in Washington, D.C., I witnessed, at a young age, how children are exposed to harsh realities of society, forcing many to mature at a much younger age. For me, I had to take on the responsibilities of caring for my younger siblings, while my mother went to work. Because of this, I was not afforded opportunities for extracurricular activities, especially community service. It was during my senior year of high school, I was finally able to become involved with community service events. My first service project involved building a playground for underprivileged children, which brought immense joy to my heart. When I was accepted to WPU, I was able to continue my passion for service, which has truly been the highlight of my college experience. Outside of the service events I enjoy with PACT, I have also been able to help facilitate other Raleigh organizations with yearly events. I am so thankful for the guidance WPU have given me. I am excited and committed to know, that through my continued efforts in community service, I am able to help those in need, as I strive to help make a brighter and better world for others.
