Esha Boyd, a second year student studying Human Services at Bristol Community College, is a community advocate on a mission to ensure children and families have a quality of life that promotes thriving and not just surviving. Esha currently volunteers with the P.A.C.E. Childworks program and the United Way of Greater New Bedford, conducting community outreach in local housing projects and surrounding neighborhoods to connect residents with local resources such as food assistance, transportation, and education. An advocate for social change, Esha is working with her fellow students, community members, and local community organizations to develop sustainable programs that ensure a better quality of life for all who reside in the SouthCoast region of Massachusetts.

Personal Statement

I recognized my desire for Social Work while owning an inner-city hair store and salon. I found myself appalled at what some of our youth was going through and wanted to reach them in a different way. I began an internship at the United Way that involved case managing for people who were in danger of losing a child to the Department of Children and Families. Despite a high need for social work in the greater New Bedford area, it became obvious very quickly that programs and resources for families are incredibly scarce. As a volunteer at P.A.C.E Childcare Works, I recently launched the pilot of a parenting program with the goal of reducing recidivism in the Department of Children and Families. Parenting programs assist parents in their growth and development in areas that create a healthy home life and provide a mechanism for measuring whether a person is able to care for a child in their home. It is my mission to create a healthier community by helping to create healthier home lives for the children on the SouthCoast.
