Our Stories: AmeriCorps in Action
AmeriCorps Member Spotlight – Beth Herman
Beth Herman serves as an AmeriCorps member with Campus Compact K2H Civic Futures at the History of Colorado Center in Denver, Colorado.
Tell us a bit about your project!
My ongoing project at my service site is working on the Hands on History program with the education department! The program puts on summer and spring break camps and also provides virtual learning for kids at home. I have such a fun time sharing Colorado history with students and seeing them get excited about activities and crafts.
What have you learned from your AmeriCorps K2H service?
I often find myself wanting to be involved in so much but then getting discouraged with myself when I can’t seem to do it all. Juggling all the different opportunities and responsibilities that come with AmeriCorps has taught me to be patient with myself. With so much to learn and gain it can be difficult to be nice to yourself when you are unable to achieve everything. But the community at History Colorado and AmeriCorps has shown me great support, often pointing toward self-care and reminding me that success in any endeavor takes time.
What is your proudest achievement from your time with AmeriCorps?
My proudest achievement in my service year has been all the little moments with students at the History Colorado Center. Any time a kid shares with me what they have created or learned makes me proud. I love to see the excitement in kids when learning about history and Colorado.
