Nadesha Phipps

Stetson University

Nadesha Phipps, a third-year Health Sciences major and Bonner Program student at Stetson University, cares deeply about addressing health inequities across central Florida. For three years, Desha has worked with Advent Health hospital's Community Care program, through which she has increased peoples' access to health care by building a community resource database for patients, marketing Community Care resources and programming, recruiting and training new volunteers to serve as Health Coaches for low-income patients, and developing new programs that increase patient retention rates. She also served as a Health Coach herself, working hand-in-hand with patients to improve their health outcomes.

Personal Statement

Through Stetson University's Bonner Program, I have had the opportunity to work closely with the non-profit organization ‘Advent Health Community Care’ as an intern. The Community Care program is a free program offered to chronically ill patients who need assistance with their health. With a team of nurses, social workers, and health coaches from the university, patients get the extra attention and time needed to better improve their health. As an intern, I have been able to assist with volunteer recruitment, program management, the establishment of protocols, clerical work, and advertisement, and I have served as a health coach, too. I believe that access to health care is a fundamental right that is denied to too many who are poor, sick, or otherwise disadvantaged, and I want to devote my career to addressing health inequities in my community.
