Personal Statement

I became a caretaker at just eleven years old and was tasked with the role of assisting my grandmother, who suffered from dementia. My extremely busy parents entrusted me with her bathing, feeding, and changing her frequently soiled diapers. Four years later, I took on similar responsibilities for my sister’s baby. My grandmother and niece are the reasons why I am committed to helping members of my community. True to this commitment, I served as a Mayor’s Youth Council member planning activities for youth to improve the safety of our neighborhoods. I designed and spearheaded workshops on violence prevention methods, personal development skills, and college preparation. On-campus, I ran for senate office on a platform focused on representing the student’s interests concerning academic policies and regulations. To execute my mission, I interviewed students and faculty on these issues, and proposed actionable solutions before the student body. Off-campus, I am on the Boston Medical Center’s executive board for the Transition Together Mentor Program which helps epilepsy-diagnosed youth to transition from pediatric care to adult care. My experiences in and out of the classroom reflect my dedication to public service.
