Updates and Opportunities! – Summer Global Learning Eval, ISL Summit Submission Deadline Extended, Community Impact & Partnership Ethics Webinars

January 27, 2016

Greetings globalsl Colleagues & Friends!

Please join us in spreading the word and making the most of several exciting updates and opportunities. As part of globalsl’s ongoing commitment to mobilize research and best practices supporting partnerships for global learning and cooperative development:

  1. Institutions and organizations advancing intercultural, civic, and critically reflective learning during (Northern) summer programming (including summer programs that start with coursework during the spring term) are invited to participate in the 3rd Global Engagement Survey during Summer 2016. Join this multi-institutional effort and have the (confidential) opportunity to compare your institution to the overall, mixed methods dataset. This is a rare opportunity for those of us who get excited by challenging ourselves and considering strengths and opportunities across institutional contexts. Read further at the link and/or email Dr. Eric Hartman (emhartman(at)gmail(dot)com) with any questions.
  2. Globalsl will continue its webinar series with collegial discussion opportunities at noon EST on February 19 and March 2. Mark your calendars! February 19 participants will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with Dr. Marianne A. Larsen, editor of International Service Learning: Engaging Host Communities (Routledge Research in International and Comparative Education)Several contributors will appear with Dr. Larsen. The March 2 webinar will examine frameworks for ethical partnerships emerging from Nicaragua-Canada, Jamaica-US, and Ireland-Global partnerships.  Stay tuned for opportunities to register and please sign up for email updates on the right side of the blog page if you have not done so already.
  3. The submission deadline for the 4th International Service-Learning Summit has been extended to February 15. We are very excited to see the submissions we have already received, and encouraged to see increasing diversity in presenters, institutions, institutional positions and locations of learning. Please visit the Summit webpage and consider submitting a presentation or case study. We look forward to continuing the International Service-Learning Summit tradition, October 23 – 25, 2016! Remember, this Summit has registration scholarship opportunities for community organizations and individuals coming from the Global South.
  4. Please email ideas for webinars or guest blog posts! (buildingbetterworld(at)gmail(dot)com). The community gathered at globalsl is growing in numbers and diversity. Many thanks to Richard Slimbach (Azusa Pacific University, California), Judy Bruce (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), Cynthia Toms (Westmont College, California), Nora Reynolds (Temple University / Water for Waslala, Pennsylvania / Nicaragua), Emily Morrison (George Washington University), Richard Kiely (Cornell University),  Jordan Thomas (Kansas State University), and Caitlin Ferrarini (World Teach Colombia) for recent guest posts and/or contributions in our partnership with the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning.  More collaborators from more positions and perspectives around the world = more insight.
