Emily Lasseigne, Our Lady of the Lake College

Emily Lasseigne is in her fourth year pursuing a Biology degree in Human Medicine. For four years she has served in leadership roles which laid the platform for her to recruit and educate the college and surrounding communities regarding awareness. One awareness initiative was ignited after Emily’s experience volunteering with St. Joseph’s Hospice. After working with death and dying, she felt called to be a voice for those who are dying and address issues that involve end-of-life directives. This end-of-life directive included presenting awareness education to the community regarding the likelihood of completing Power of Attorney for Healthcare. 
Emily takes full advantage of her leadership roles on campus. During her years of service in the Student Ambassador (SA) Leadership Program she currently serves as SA Liaison. Emily has mentored freshmen enrolled in the Pre-Student Ambassador Liaison (PAL) Mentor-Mentee Program guiding them through their first year of college. As Beta Sigma Mu President, Emily has worked collaboratively with the student organization officers and faculty advisors to provide pre-advanced degree seeking students knowledge regarding preparing for their advanced degree application processes. Students partake in service opportunities such as visiting the Children’s Hospital where they bring gifts to patients and visiting St. Jude’s Hospital. Emily’s civic engagements include, Habitat for Humanity, American Heart Association, led freshmen in college pledge during Freshmen Convocation, and Area Health Education Center programs such as CI: Healthcare Day and Day with the Docs.

Mother Teresa said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples”. Although I may not be able to make a huge impact on the world alone, I recognize that by touching the life of one person will not only positively impact them but also those around me. I have taken this quote to heart as I serve the college as Student Ambassador Liaison and Beta Sigma Mu President. I am called to lead these organizations to make a lasting impact on the school community. I have a passion for end of life and the political and emotional issues that arise when an individual is dying. There is a lack of education on the importance of completing advanced directives. At the college and hospital, I have completed a research project addressing this issue and determining better ways to educate individuals on the matter. One of my goals after I graduate is to continue my lasting impression on Our Lady of the Lake College. Serving beside current students shows that these qualities of selflessness and compassion can extend far beyond your time in school and into your everyday life.
