Horst Bauer, San Francisco State University

Horst Bauer, a second year Political Science major at San Francisco State University, has been actively engaged in civics and public service since his teens. In 2009, he won the title of City Ambassador in his hometown of Manteca, California, where he had campaigned for a Congressional candidate, and in 2012, he won a scholarship competition sponsored by Youth Focus Inc., to be designated Golden State Ambassador. As Ambassador, Horst represented California youth at the California State Fair and other statewide celebrations, promoting community service. Because of his fundraising work for “It Gets Better,” an advocacy campaign for LGBT youth and against bullying, he was able purchase the book, It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying and Creating a Life Worth Living, for each of the 12 libraries in San Joaquin County. Since then, he has been a pretrial intern for the Federal District Court in Oakland, California, and currently serves as an intern for California State Assembly member Nancy Skinner, thus fueling his passion for advancing civil rights and educational equity through public policy.
