Nicole Nunez
Farmingdale State College
Farmingdale State College sophomore Nicole Nunez was recognized early on in her academic career as an outstanding student who consistently engages in diligent efforts to create positive change on the FSC campus, and in the greater community. In her junior year she became President of the college's Social Justice Club, and was instrumental in increasing club membership and events. Nicole was recently inducted into the FSC Social Science Research Institute's Distinguished Scholars Academy, where she spoke eloquently about her struggles as an immigrant. Her dedication to immigration issues continued through her social justice internship at Make The Road NY, where she advocated in Washington D.C. for the passage of a "Clean Dream Act". Nicole decided to volunteer at MRNY after her internship was complete. Her responsibilities as a FSC student senator highlight her ongoing service to the campus community. Lastly, as a freshman she helped create, and was Vice President of, a new student club, "Love Over Hate", and assisted in facilitating local involvement in the January 2017 Women's March. Her enduring enthusiasm and persistence towards the amelioration of social justice issues continues to flourish, as her long-term goal is to put her talents to use at a non-profit organization.
Personal Statement
My parents made the decision to move to this country when I was just shy of five years old. The adversity that I have encountered has empowered me to fight for immigrant and other minority communities similar to the ones I belong to. I've always had a desire to help people who have struggled, and I recognize that I am more privileged than some. Therefore, I use it to speak up for those who are considered less than. I was awarded the opportunity to intern for Make the Road NY, a non-profit organization that empowers the Latino and working class communities. Although my internship is over, I still volunteer with the organization. Traveling to Washington, DC to speak with senators and representatives of my community have become a norm. On campus, I am the president for the Social Justice Club. Working with my members to bring awareness to social justice issues on campus and provide resources to students. I am also a student senator where we implement legislation on critical issues that affect students. I am a firm believer that in order to build a better tomorrow, we today must take the steps to build equality.
