Sunny Hong is a junior at Fairfield University majoring in a self-designed Global Public Health Studies degree, with minors in International Studies and Biochemistry. Last summer, Sunny participated in Fairfield's Global Scholars Program, working in The Gambia with a non-profit organization focusing on girls' education called Starfish International. Sunny returned from the Global Scholars Program on fire, aware of her strengths, and ready to make a difference in the world. She is in the process of founding a Global Health Club on campus that will organize our students and university resources to make an impact in our region, incorporating outreach to local public health-related and educational facilities. She plans to support health education at local elementary schools, organize an international service trip, and facilitate on-campus conversations on current global health issues.
Personal Statement
As a major in Global Public Health and minors in International Studies and Biochemistry, I have always wanted to combine all of what I have learned and give back to the Fairfield University community that has given me so many opportunities to really explore my field of interest. I have always had a passion in advocating health issues while also having a deep appreciation for cultures all around. Within the broad field of global health, I am specifically interested in child and maternal health, how healthcare workers utilize and understand the cultures of a community to provide better care and ultimately how to develop and improve healthcare systems in developing countries. Last summer, I was very fortunate to have an internship in The Gambia through the school's Global Scholars Program. While I was there, I taught courses in health and nutrition for middle and high school girls at an organization known as Starfish International. After I got back on campus I wanted to continue to build on this experience by co-creating the Global Health club. As we live in a globalized world where we are all interconnected, I envision this club to aid the campus in taking its step in playing a more prominent role in the global health community by hosting discussions, volunteering with domestic and international organizations as well as providing health education to local elementary school students.
