Personal Statement

As a child, I was introduced to Homes- Rape Crisis Coalition, a nonprofit that provides advocacy services to victims of domestic and sexual violence. My involvement with the organization provided me with invaluable experiences that ignited my interest, not only in pursuing the root causes of interpersonal violence, but also in improving the conditions of other underserved populations in my community. Currently, I serve at Room in the Inn, a community-based program that provides shelter and meals to our homeless neighbors. This opportunity allows me to continue to work with individuals who experience societal systems that not only fail to stop the cycle of violence, but also hinder escape and healing. During this past winter break, I represented the United States and Queens University through the International Sports Program Initiative that focuses on empowering marginalized youth through sport. My peers and I traveled to Laos to help empower girls, young women, and their communities to utilize the social change model through sport and physical activity. I look forward to participating in this program and anticipate the experience being yet another wonderful opportunity to share ideas and enhance my abilities to affect positive change where it is most needed.
