Karla Fulmore

Karla Fulmore, a second year student at Claflin University, is a visionary student leader, who is active in addressing issues of inequality pertaining to food deserts. She is currently working closely with fellow classmates, professors, and officials for the city of Branchville, South Carolina, in efforts to advocate for the cultivation of a grocery store chain in order to bring nutritious options to the residents while reducing and/or eliminating time spent travelling to outlying cities to obtain what they need. This includes efforts to kick-start the migration of residents and other businesses to Branchville, South Carolina, to supplement economic growth that would be associated with the project.
Personal Statement
I became an advocate for community restructuring because I grew up in small town which lacked the resources needed for a family to survive daily. Moreover, after years of going out of the city to shop for necessities, I became more involved with events and seminars that proposed a plan of action which dealt effectively with restructuring the economic development of our community. I am now attending college in a city that services many smaller, surrounding cities and/or towns. My involvement in this current project will allow myself, along with my cohorts, to bring nutritious options and increase the variety of business, which in the long run could decrease unemployment rates, ultimately eliminating the food deficit.
