Garrett Arbuckle
Morningside University
Garrett Arbuckle is a junior studying Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies. He is a student leader on campus, highly involved in Student Government, achieving presidential status as a second year student. He exemplifies servant leadership, and has emerged as campus change agent with the ability to lead and work alongside diverse groups of people. As an active member of multiple student organizations, including the Colonel Bud Day Center for Civic Engagement, the Morningside Civic Union, the Morningside Pre-Law Club, and Omicron Delta Kappa, Garrett has garnered the respect of all those he encounters, including the students, staff, faculty, and administrators at Morningside. Through his internships with member of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, he has shown that he is a reliable, energetic leader who welcomes the opportunity to delve into new tasks and challenges. The desire and commitment Garrett brings to his work inside and outside of the classroom has ensured that he is extraordinarily prepared to thrive as a fellow working to bring about social change in his community.
Personal Statement
Growing up, I volunteered with multiple organizations that have assisted in removing barriers such as poverty and hunger that are standing in the way of people living life to their fullest potential. Through this, as well as my academic preparation, I have grown to appreciate positions of service. Since beginning undergrad, I have taken on many roles such as Student Body President, a fellow for our civic engagement center, and an intern for members in the U.S. House and Senate both in Iowa and Washington D.C. These positions have allowed me to successfully lead voter registration efforts, help others navigate the process of working with the government, and educate others on topics related to voting, civic engagement, and policy. Most recently, I have led a community building and giving project for my campus that partners with a local non-profit organization to better help fund the homes they build and serve the community. Knowing there are many other individuals who also have a passion for serving the public and bettering the community, I am confident that by coming together, we can identify issues of public concern and assist with creating solutions that would address those issues.
