Emily Huber
Washington & Jefferson College
Emily Huber, a sophomore Early Childhood Development and Education major at Washington & Jefferson College, serves as a W&J Community Outreach Team Leader and After school Program Coordinator. Emily works with the W&J Director of Community Engagement and community center staff to manage an after school program at a local community center. This after school program serves over 100 at-risk youth in grades K-8 and provides them with mentoring, homework support and additional enrichment programming. Emily aids in the coordination of the program for the youth participants, and is the leader of campus efforts to recruit, train and support the other mentors in the program. Emily has excelled in her work as the Student Coordinator, and she continues to take her commitment to the next level. She has worked on several occasions with W&J student volunteers to coordinate additional activities for the local youth, in order to provide them with new and exciting opportunities. It is the charge of a Newman Civic Fellow to inspire and engage others, and she is continually going above and beyond to do so with our local youth. Emily has demonstrated her passion and drive for community service in education, and her ability to make positive social change.
Personal Statement
I knew I wanted to make a difference in young lives since I was in elementary school. I was involved in a program called Pioneer Helpers, where a group of volunteers would go to a local special needs school and work with the students once a week. When I was attending middle school, we started volunteer with the school a lot more and I realized that helping others was going to be a huge part of my life. During my freshman year I joined the Community Outreach Team and started working with the America Reads Program. In this program I have the opportunity to work with kids in grades K-8 on homework and other learning activities. Along with working in this program I also have an internship at a local elementary school (Trinity East) working in a life skills class. Both of these opportunities has given me more appreciation for the things I have received, and now it's my turn to give back to these students and make a difference in their lives. All it takes is one role model to make a difference in so many lives.
