William Paterson University

Kody Guedes, a sophomore majoring in Communications and Media Production, serves the WP and local community by participating in numerous university coordinated civic engagement activities, Student Government and as an Orientation Leader. Kody embodies the ideals of giving back to his community and making a difference by volunteering his time and talents, often at agencies he utilized as a child. As a student leader, Kody has helped coordinate civic engagement activities, including a Habitat for Humanity build, by assisting with promotions, recruiting volunteers and actively participating. He has participated in WP's Alternate Spring Break to help restore cabins at a YMCA Camp that serves high risk youth and at the annual MLK Day of Service at local community soup kitchens, pantries, park clean-ups and senior centers. Kody worked with at-risk youth at the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA and addresses issues of hunger by volunteering for several meal packaging activities for local agencies and internationally for Stop Hunger Now. As a recipient of the Student Government's Rising Star Award, he has demonstrated leadership, involvement, service to the university and community with the potential for future service to William Paterson and beyond.

Personal Statement

Since I was a boy, I have been passionate about giving back to my community. So, when it came to community engagement on my campus I was ready to take the bull by the horn! During my first semester I joined the Student Government with a passion to connect and serve the student body. Being part of SGA has allowed me to work with many departments and plan my first civic engagement event with Habitat for Humanity. As an Orientation Leader, I have helped new students experience the love I have for the WP community. Last year I participated in Alternate Spring Break where we remodeled a cabin for a YMCA camp that serves at-risk youth. I have also participated in civic engagement activities including Martin Luther King Day of Service, Boys and Girls Club and YMCA of Paterson, Liberty State Park Clean-Up, and Stop Hunger Now. Most significantly, I have been able to give back to Father English Community Center where I went as a child with my family. Being able to give back has given me the skills and motivation to do my best and take every day as a day for change.
