Personal Statement

An intense desire to recognize and promote advancement for all people fuels my endeavors in intentional service and advocacy. When I decided to attend Drake University, I had never been to Des Moines, Iowa. I had no cognition of the trials and tribulations everyday citizens in the Drake Neighborhood faced as they attempted to feed their family, to create a home, and to make a living. I became dedicated to finding out. From my first-year on campus as an AmeriCorps member at a local housing non-profit to my work as a Service Learning Ambassador in our Community Engaged Learning office, my passions have spanned from food insecurity to mental health advocacy, and more. I am grounded by one consistent mission: by being the authentic me, I will bring the authentic you into existence with me. As we live amongst a society where political affiliations are placed above consideration for individual humanity, I find that those who are suffering the most are often silenced. My aim is to restore our faith in one another through collaborative community development and social policy. With that, we will deliberately acknowledge the life experiences of every person and promote the well-being of our community.
