Conversational Webinar with Global Service-Learning Researchers, Practitioners, Friday, Oct 16

October 10, 2015

globalsl is continuing its Fall 2015 Webinar Series with a conversational opportunity among global service-learning thinkers and practitioners. Feedback from our last webinar suggested it was well-received, and that people would like to see more, at varying levels. This upcoming webinar continues our commitment to opening up an online, discursive space. This particular opportunity is not intended as instructional or entry level, but rather as a place to reflect on meaning and consider foundational questions in the field together.

Please register now, here or below, to be part of the conversation. You will receive sign-in information on Thursday, October 15, in preparation for the October 16 webinar.

Going to the Action: Stay Home and Generation Abroad – Philosophical Framing, Friday, October 16, noon – 1:30 EST

Considering practitioner wisdom, philosophical and theoretical framing of global engagement and global citizenship, and connections to the fields of global and community development, four global service-learning practitioner-scholars will discuss how the specific values and disruption of global service-learning undermine calls to“Help your Own Country” (see 6-minute documentary link below). They will consider how this particular pedagogy and partnership practice at once disrupts national identities and engages the possibility of deep connection with anyone, everywhere. Particular classroom and institutional strategies for engaging this dialogue will be shared. Panelists include:

  • Dr. Richard Kiely, Director of Engaged Learning & Research, Cornell University
  • Dr. Janice McMillan, Senior Lecturer, Director: University of Cape Town Global Citizenship programme
  • Dr. Cynthia Toms, Director of Global Education, Westmont College
  • Introduced and facilitated by Dr. Eric Hartman, Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University & Editor, globalsl.org
