Dominick Bartels
Lewis UniversityDominick Bartels, a second-year student at Lewis University, is a student leader passionate about democracy and justice. For the past year, he has worked to empower his peers to participate in the community by serving as a student leader for community engaged learning courses in political science and theology. Simultaneously, Dominick has served as an officer with the University’s Student Senate, lifting up the concerns of Lewis students to improve the quality of life on campus. A Nebraska native, Dominick has invested his time in better understanding the challenges, and priorities of Nebraskan families, while also getting involved with politic leaders in Omaha.
Personal Statement
I became involved in advocacy work in high school as a student journalist. I saw firsthand how students and young people are discounted by adults and even unconstitutionally censured in the schoolhouse. This led me to work toward organizing grassroots support for legislation which would protect the first amendment rights of high school and college students. Getting my toes wet in advocacy, I bloomed in college where I have worked towards becoming an effective ally, critically examining the world which surrounds me, and advocating for social change. Currently, I am pursuing a double major in Public Policy and Peace and Justice Studies. Throughout my studies, it has become apparent that the current system is not a one size fits all system. Due to this realization, I am committed to working towards social change through any means necessary, including during my future career as an attorney.
