Personal Statement

Ghandi once said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service." His words became part of my life in high school. Many students at my high school live on their own, take care of their siblings or even their parents. A simple thing such as new clothing can make a difference in their lives. I created a service organization called "The Goldbug Closet" to provide them with new clothes. Creating this organization was challenging but rewarding. It provided me the opportunity to speak at civic meetings and taught me that true leadership is serving others. The importance of civic engagement is seen in the results achieved when individuals see an issue that arises in their community, and they take action. I have experienced firsthand how my community supports organizations and schools. I take pride in being a member of a community that has outstanding civic engagement from my fellow community members. After providing a pair of shoes to a middle school coach to give to one of her athletes, she thanked me, and I replied, "No big deal". She responded, "It is to him." In that moment, I learned the true importance of civic involvement.
