CPV College is Possible Stories

This video series shows the stories of six college students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college. Each student shares his/her experiences ranging from applying, enrolling, and being successful in college.

Allen’s Story
Allen is a student at Central Michigan University, and he believes that being involved in GEARUP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) was the main influence in his decision to enroll in college. Allen is very involved on campus and believes this has contributed to his success in college.

Aurielle’s Story
Aurielle is a student at Central Michigan University, and she is the first in her family to go to college. Aurielle knew she wanted to attend college, and because she was in foster care, she was able to obtain grants and scholarships from multiple agencies that wanted to help fund her post-secondary education. She speaks of her experiences and raises awareness of the many options available for youth coming from a similar situation.

Breanna’s Story
Breanna is a first-generation college student at Central Michigan University. Growing up, Breanna was involved in the Upward Bound college preparation program, which she believes helped her prepare for and enroll in college. She explains her experiences with Upward Bound as well as encourages utilizing available resources to aid in the college process for all students.

Paula’s Story
Paula is a student at Western Michigan University, and is the first person in her family to go to college. Coming from a household where her mother spoke very little English, Paula had to navigate the college-going process on her own. She shares her stories and advice for upcoming college students on how to access and succeed in college.

Robert’s Story
Robert is a student at the University of Michigan-Flint, and is the first person in his family to attend college. Although he was overwhelmed by the process at first, Robert utilized the people and resources available at his high school and on his college campus to help guide his path to success in school. He is now overwhelmed by the possible career options available with his college degree.

Tom’s Story
Tom is a student at Central Michigan University, and the first person in his family to attend a four-year university. Tom did not always want to go to college; however, he now realizes the important role post-secondary education play in helping him achieve his dreams.
