Although much of the work I have done with Habitat for Humanity has been largely physical labor, I have learned it can be so much more. In addition to volunteering with our local Habitat affiliate on construction sites of houses at varying stages in completion from painting, demolition, to insulation; I have brought awareness to our community about the rising problem of homelessness through individual effort and concern, and the help of a hardworking team of six executive board members. We helped put on a campus program called Shantytown, a humbling homeless simulation of creating shanties to sleep in overnight. Together we have raised money to fund an annual Collegiate Challenge spring break mission trip with Habitat International. Last year we went to Georgetown, South Carolina where we constructed the foundation of a house. Habitat has forever changed my outlook on life, I will continue working to help low income populations receive shelter on a local and global scale. I’m looking forward to helping the Hattiesburg Area Habitat over spring break this year as we travel to Mississippi.
