Naomi Bick, Washington & Jefferson College
Naomi Bick, a sophomore political science major at Washington & Jefferson College, serves as a W&J Volunteer Corps Program Coordinator and a Community Outreach Team Member. Naomi works with the Director of Community Engagement to manage an after-school program at a local community center. This after-school program serves over 60 at-risk youth in grades K-8 and provides them with mentoring, homework support and additional enrichment programming. Naomi aids in the coordination of the program for the youth participants, and is the leader of campus efforts to recruit and train the other mentors in the program. Naomi has not only been able to serve as an outstanding mentor to the youth in the program, but she has been able to recruit, train and support more mentors and tutors than have volunteered for the center in the last several years. She does this by advocating for the services of the center to faculty, staff, students and the other members of the community. It is the charge of a Newman Civic Fellow to inspire and engage others, which has been her chief accomplishment in this program, as well as an accomplishment in the many other campus efforts with which she is involved.
