Maurice McCaulley, Georgetown University

Maurice McCaulley, a Culture and Politics major and Justice and Peace Studies minor at Georgetown University, seeks to address the root causes of social justice issues by engaging in direct service with communities. Maurice’s involvement in service began in the Center for Social Justice (CSJ) where he participates in various programming, including serving on the Advisory Board for Student Organizations, which delegates CSJ’s resources; he serves as a tutor for the DC Schools Project, teaching English to adult language learners; and as Co-Chair of the 2013 Community Service Day, he planned service projects, providing first-year students opportunities to engage in service with DC’s Ward 7. Last year, Maurice also participated in an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip to Appalachia. This year he is co-coordinating the Ethics of Incarceration ASB trip, where with a group of 12 students, they will explore the punitive and restorative aspects of the American prison system in New York and DC. In addition to these commitments to serve the community and engage students, Maurice is an active member of Alpha Phi Omega, Georgetown’s service fraternity. Maurice believes that service is a way to break down stereotypes, develop empathy, and strive together for equality and justice.
