Jennifer Alejo, Humboldt State University

Jennifer Alejo’s leadership experience and activism at Humboldt State University is extensive. In addition to organizing a College Ready Conference for local high school students, directing HSU’s Alternative Spring Break, completing 500 hours of community service as an Americorps member, and coordinating a 1-unit class for Take Back the Night, she has also been a key advocate for undocumented students at HSU. Jennifer’s leadership with “Finding Resources and Empowerment through Education” (F.R.E.E.) – a club she created to build support for undocumented students – has inspired HSU students, staff, and faculty members to educate themselves and others about the challenges faced by this growing population. In addition, Jennifer has expanded F.R.E.E’s work to develop relationships and host workshops with local organizations, an indication of both her determination and her vision for creating and building community. As a result of Jennifer’s efforts, HSU has recently created an Undocumented Students Task Force, which is charged with examining and recommending policy and practice changes that will make our campus more accessible and inclusive. Jennifer was the recipient of HSU’s Al Elpusan Award for Student Activism in Spring 2012, and has since continued to demonstrate her commitment to supporting those whose voices are not always heard.
