Edwin Ramos, Miami Dade College
Edwin A. Ramos, a third year student at Miami Dade College, and the first in his family to attend college, is a passionate and dedicated leader fighting for immigrant justice. He has served as president of Students Working for Equal Rights (SWER) for the past two years. In that capacity, he has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about immigration issues, with a special focus on the plight of undocumented students and families. He is a powerful voice in the community by reaching out to youth and informing immigrant families about their rights. He has organized Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) clinics that have helped over 100 families apply for deferred action. He also works extensively to promote graduation rates of undocumented students within the public school system, including informing them of scholarships and higher education options regardless of their legal status, and he has testified at the state legislature about tuition options for undocumented students. Edwin is also an SGA Senator and Treasurer, and has earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for the hundreds of hours of service he contributes each year. Edwin hopes to become an English teacher where he can inspire the next generation of leaders.
