Rachel Simari, Wayne State University, Michigan
Rachel Simari is a junior at Wayne State University in the community of Detroit, Michigan. Rachel is a change agent involved with the social issues of depressed Detroit and urban revitalization efforts. As a student leader on campus, Rachel is the president of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and assisted in directing Wayne State’s Alternative Spring Break Detroit (ASBD) 2011 program. She secured partner volunteer sites throughout the city that address some of Detroit’s social issues, including hunger, homelessness, crime, blight and education. Through the program, partners educate ASBD participants about the city in order to stimulate conversations about long-term solutions.
