Personal Statement

My supportive friends, mentors, and I, led the development of NJCU Drea[me]rs. We are the first organization on my campus that addresses the financial, legal, and social needs of undocumented students. The Drea[me]rs team went on to create Undocuknights, a student led UndocuAlly training program, that works to deepen student, staff, faculty, and administration understanding of what it means to be undocumented. I always say that if at least one person in the room walks out knowing a little more, they can have a big impact on the lives of these students. The team also pioneered the #SponsorADream campaign. DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was an executive order, that allowed eligible undocumented individuals to work in this country without fear of deportation. When this program was rescinded, our organization did not want the lack of funds for the $495.00 renewal fee to be an obstacle. We tackled this issue by making promotional videos for our campaign and selling handmade t-shirts. In the end we raised enough for 3 renewals. I alone can't credit for everything Drea[me]rs has done. All of these achievements were the result of many students and faculty, contributing their talents to benefit their community.
