Peterly Jean Baptiste

Peterly Jean Baptiste is a sophomore, majoring in Language and International Trade and Economics, with a 3.5 gpa. Originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Peterly came to the United States 6 years ago, and to SUNY Oswego in August 2015. Peterly has maintained a steadfast commitment to the environment and to sustainability, serving on the executive board of our student-run Go Green Team, and as an intern in our Sustainability Office.
As President & Secretary of the Go Green Team, Peterly initiated and coordinated a Tap In program, a reusable water bottle initiatives that has received pledges from over 1,250 students to not buy or use disposable bottles. As an intern, Peterly worked on the American Farmland Trust project educating students on the benefits of buying local food products.
Peterly is also a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service organization, and formerly served as the Sustainability Coordinator for Student Association, SUNY Oswego student governing body. His commitment to service, sustainability and community engagement is exemplary.
Personal Statement
Since I came to campus I have been committed to my community and to sustaining our environment. I joined the Go Green Team, SUNY Oswego's Environmental Club, my first semester on campus. This student-run organization educates the campus community about sustainable living and environmental issues.
As a freshmen, I was selected to intern with American Farmland Trust, where I worked on the Farm to SUNY program which aims to expand market opportunities for New York farmers while bringing local food into college communities. My task was to educate students on the benefits of local food purchasing and to publicize SUNY Oswego's local food procurement program.
Last year, I was the Sustainability Coordinator for Student Association serving as a liaison between the Sustainability Department and the student governing body. This year, I have worked on various programs that reduce waste, including our ongoing food and plastic waste programs.
I am proud to currently serve as the President of the Go-Green Team. This semester I coordinated our Tap In program, a reusable water bottle initiative where bottles are tagged with individual bar codes that tracks student refills and environmental impact. So far, 1250 student have taken the pledge not to buy disposables.
