Misha Smith is a second year student at Tallahassee Community College. Ms. Smith is majoring in Humanities. Ms. Smith also applied and was selected for the appointment of Senator for Communication and Humanities with TCC's Student Government Association. During her time at TCC, and especially while in SGA, her passion for addressing issues of poverty in the Tallahassee area were made apparent. In the spring semester of the her first year, she volunteered a considerable amount of time with Literacy Volunteers of Leon County, an organization that assists individuals with learning how to read, write, or speak English to ensure these literacy skills are not an obstacle for them in pursuing life goals. She also spent considerable amount of time in the beginning of her second year volunteering at Big Bend Homeless Coalition, a family and women's homeless community focused on ending homelessness through leadership, education, advocacy, and the provision of quality services. As a result of these experiences, and part of the reasoning of her wanting to be a part of SGA was to bring awareness to these issues to her fellow peers. And as she is preparing to graduate, she is displaying this civic efficacy by coordinating a SGA service event with the Big Bend Homeless Coalition to advocate for increased community and financial support for the homeless populations and prevention of homelessness in the Tallahassee area.
