Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Jesse Whelan-Small is the Sophomore Class President of Hobart College and has broadened his engagement with the Geneva community, and extended Finger Lakes Region, through his involvement as a research assistant with the sociology department, as a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister program, and most notably with his leadership with the FLX College Leaders program. As the student coordinator FLX College Leaders, he recruits peers to connect virtually with high schoolers from rural Wayne County to discuss college preparation, share resources, and build confidence throughout the application process. Although the high schoolers live 15 to 40 miles from Hobart and William Smith Colleges campus, Jesse is able to leverage technology to build a bridge between college students and high schoolers through this mutually beneficial partnership.

Jesse Whelan-Small Campus Compact Civic Newman Fellowship Personal Statement It was not until I got to college that I realized just how hard applying to college is. I was fortunate enough to have had help from my parents every step of the way, from scheduling tours to revising essays to getting forms organized. A few weeks into my first year of college, after talking with some friends about their journeys to end up at Hobart and William Smith, I realized how difficult the process can be without guidance. So, when I got the opportunity to join FLX College Leaders, a program designed to help local high school seniors go through that challenging time, I jumped on it. The curriculum is designed to work with high school juniors in the spring, going over the basics of college applications, as well as developing skills to be peer leaders for other students applying to schools in the fall. In the fall, we work directly with the students, ensuring that we can provide flexible support to meet their exact needs.
