Jasmyn Alexander
High Point UniversityMs. Jasmyn Alexander, a third-year Bonner Leader at High Point University, embodies the spirit of our university's mission to prepare students to live lives of significance in our complex global community. Over the last three years, she has embedded herself in grassroots work with immigrants, refugees, and other marginalized populations in our community. Through her EMT training and health science major, she is committed to a community-engaged capstone project for next year that will help a cohort of our under-served residents join together in a wellness program through which they can support each other in healthy workout habits, creating grocery lists, gardening, and developing healthy cooking skills. Ms. Alexander practices the kind of experiential learning HPU promotes for all our students, uniting her academic work with her passion to serve others.
Personal Statement
My desire to become a dedicated community service volunteer, in addition to addressing issues of healthy lifestyles amongst lower socioeconomic classes began when I was in high school. During my high school career, my aspiration to become a medical professional grew with my various opportunities to serve in my community. I recognized the need for lifestyle changes for families that may not have the accessibility to health benefits education, healthy food options, or even exercise equipment. The privilege of becoming a Bonner Leader at High Point University has afforded me the opportunity of enhancing my desire to make a change within my community. I have had the chance to host a community-wide Zumbathon, assist with facilitating the Macedonia Family Resource Center annual 5K race, and on campus I have been given the opportunity to host an Exercise Science annual 5K as well. Based on the knowledge I acquire through my major at HPU, I hope to create sustainable changes with the High Point community of raising awareness for the importance of health, wellness and exercise for any and everyone!
