Gabriela Martinez

Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Gabriela Martinez, a William Smith Junior, balances her civic interests and commitments through her involvement as the Civic Leader for Outreach as well as through the HWS Leads Certificate Program. She is committed to building awareness of opportunities to authentically engage with the Geneva community, and her leadership by example is impressive. Equally noteworthy, is her work with a pilot effort she's hoping to launch, 'By Your Side' which will promote the inclusion of health resources to children in underserved communities. We're thrilled to have Gaby carry on the proud tradition of HWS Campus Compact Civic Newman fellows - a HWS student has been selected annually since 2012 https://www.hws.edu/academics/service/newman_fellows.aspx?

Personal Statement

Growing up, I was fortunate to mirror my parents when giving back to the community—seeing how my father would use his shoe store as a place for the district to come and talk to one another and connect. My dad was the bridge between people and their need for a job; he connected them to others. As I grew up, I noticed that BIPOC were oppressed in my community due to systemic racism. People in my neighborhood didn’t get the best housing or jobs that they needed. Growing up, I wasn’t presented with the opportunity to participate in any community service. Once I got to HWS, I made it my job to integrate myself into the community. I want to be the bridge for people and provide them with the resources they need. Thus far, I have accomplished this and more by working as the Civic Lead of Outreach for The Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning. During my time at college, I have helped coordinate the Community Lunch program, the Holiday Gift Program, and the Blood drive. Through these programs, I have given back to a community that I am apart of and to whom I can relate.
