Fatima Jallow Nambouh

North Shore Community College

Fatima Jallow Nambouh is a third-year Liberal Arts, political science pathway student who is actively advancing her dream of having a positive impact on the world. Fatima is a native of The Gambia, the smallest country in Africa. She moved to the United States in 2016 and enrolled at NSCC that fall. Since enrolling, Fatima has excelled academically, maintaining a 4.0 GPA with a full-time course load. Fatima has also immersed herself in NSCC's co-curricular experiences. She became the Vice President of the Multi Cultural Society (MCS) and was also elected to serve as the Student Representative on the college's Board of Trustees for school year 2017/2018. Additionally, Fatima was accepted as an intern into the Massachusetts Commonwealth Seminar to learn about the workings of the Massachusetts state government. She has also participated in Community College Student Leadership Association (CCSLA) Conferences and at the MA Board of Higher Education Student Advisory Council (SAC) meetings. And if all this were not enough (in addition to raising her four-year old son as a single mom and working 60 hours a week to pay the bills!) she still finds time to give to her community. She regularly volunteers at My Brother's Table, a social services organization in Lynn, MA, with the college's new Mobile Food Market, and with American Red Cross' blood drives. In all of her roles and daily life, Fatima embodies the tenets of Newman Civic Fellowship and what it means to be a change agent through passionate commitment to social justice and community service.

Personal Statement

I relocated to the United States 4 years ago from The Gambia with my academic and career goals. I enrolled at North Shore Community College in September 2016. Since then, I have immersed myself anything and everything that would be influential to my academic growth, development, and participate in community service. Being actively involved in my community is not only important to me, but it is fulfilling. As a young girl, my environment and the harsh living conditions in which I found myself bred in me a strong desire to become an agent of change. I feel the responsibility to effect change and believe there are contributions I can make that will make a difference. I am a Supplemental Peer Tutoring (SPT), Co-Vice President of the MultiCultural Society, and 2017 - 2018 elected Student Trustee. Involving myself in community service also helps prepare me to become a responsible and active citizen, who understands the challenges local people face and work to improve the quality of life through political and non-political processes. I am part of a community that has welcomed me helped me grow. I will continue to strive to bring positive change.
